the best gluten free apple crisp

When the time comes for you to do something with those apples that have been sitting on the counter for almost too long… (is it just me?…) make this apple crisp! The original version of this recipe has been in my family for decades, but a few years ago I made some simple ingredient swaps to make it gluten free. It is a fast, never-fail, sweet dessert that you can whip up on a weeknight.

The Best Apples for Baking a Crisp

Granny Smith, Cosmic Crisp, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Jonagold, and Braeburn are all delicious in a crisp! I used Cosmic Crisp when I took photos for this recipe, and they turned out perfectly tender-crisp with great flavor.

Ingredients

5 cups sliced apples (3-4 large, or 5-6 small/medium)
1/4 cup cane sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon

Gluten Free Streusel Topping Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 cup gluten free rolled oats
1/2 cup gluten free 1-to-1 baking flour (I use this kind!)
1/3 cup cane sugar
2/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp baking powder

How to Make Gluten Free Apple Crisp

1. Lightly butter a 9”x’9” inch baking dish and preheat the oven to 350°F.

2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1 to 1.5 inch slices until you get approximately 5 cups of sliced apples. Sprinkle the cane sugar and cinnamon on top of the apples and toss to coat.

(The most time-consuming part is peeling and slicing the apples- consider using an apple peeler like this one.)
