Texas-Style Ground Beef Skillet Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 3/4 cup onion (diced)
- 1 green bell pepper (seeded and diced)
- 2 cups tomatoes OR 1 15 oz. can diced tomatoes (undrained)
- 1/2 cup minute rice (unprepared)
- 1 15 oz. can light red kidney beans (undrained)
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic salt
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- corn chips
Directions
After you’ve gathered your ingredients, cook your ground beef, pepper, and diced onion together in a large skillet on your stove top. When the beef is browned and the onion is translucent, remove the pan from the heat and drain the grease. Return the pan to the heat.
Next, stir in tomatoes, beans, rice, chili powder, garlic salt, water, and sea salt. Combine these ingredients well and bring to a boil. After it begins to boil, reduce the heat and simmer while covered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat. Top with shredded cheese and put the lid back on. Once the cheese is melted, serve immediately with a few corn chips. Enjoy!
Does this recipe allow substitutions?
Yes! I adjust this recipe year-round depending on what ingredients I have on hand. Texas-Style Ground Beef Skillet is one of the most forgiving recipes! Scroll on for my suggestions below.
Onions
I generally use white onions for the biggest pizzazz, but sweet onions and yellow onions are great, too.
Tomatoes
- Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes (any of the following flavors: garlic and onion, with green chilies, adobo seasoning, chipotle peppers, or roasted garlic)
- Fresh tomatoes, seeded and diced (check out my favorite varieties to grow here!)
- Frozen tomatoes, seeded and diced before freezing
Peppers
Green bell pepper is the standard for this recipe, however, my kids don’t notice when I swap it out for a hand full of diced poblano peppers to add a little zip to the flavor.
Preserving tip: If you have an abundance of peppers, remove the seeds, dice them and put them into the freezer in 1 or 2 cup portions. You’ll love having this handy ingredient on hand!
Kidney Beans
You can use black beans (rinsed and the can filled with fresh water), or swap light red kidney beans for dark red.
Cheese
Shredded cheese is the way to go. Use sharp cheddar, mild cheddar, colby jack, pepper jack, or a Mexican cheese blend.
